Great hotel

I stayed here for an overnight school trip and really enjoyed it. Its a steep hike from the lobby to the jr suites (very nice!) or they'll give you a ride. They have a self sustaining water filtration system and several other sustainable features, and they grow their own coffee offsite (it's incredible).

Bottom line:

Yes, I would recommend it to a friend

Okay Hotel But Not Great

We got the Heliconia Hotel after dark, cold and wet and exhausted from the long and bumpy drive to Monteverde. We were offered a complementary drink but really it seemed an excuse to try to sell us on a meal in the restaurant that night.
We did eat and the food was decent, at breakfast they reminded me that the buffet was not included in my room rate (as if I would be unwilling to pay).
The room was clean and large and pretty with a big tub in the corner of the bedroom.
Unfortunately there was not enough hot water to fill it.
When I drained the tub, sewage came up in the bathroom floor and we had to change rooms.
The staff was agreeable but not genuinely nice or hospitable.
I think I'll try the Monteverde Lodge and Gardens next time.
