I must say that one gal on days at the desk was very helpful and so was Walter. But three urgent messages left in the evening at the desk were never delivered to a party whose phone was not working (I was told the phone worked and they were not in their room when in fact they were). We were given glib and erratic answers when inquiring about tour and ground transfer schedules by the male staff working evenings. When calling for room service we were ingnored. We were under the impression that our room would have a refrig. When asking about that we were told that NO rooms had refrig when in fact several did including the ajoining #16. The price for a can of tonic water was never (out of 4 purchases) the same. Our bath had a shower only and the flow of hot water was little more than a trickle. Not a way to greet the damp chilly mornings -- the room had no heat. The climb to our room was very steep and the trail would have been much better constructed as stairs -- not the course but still slick concrete block layed on end. We really had to watch our footing. The walk down to the lower restaurant was on a muddy road. For the money why wasn't there a well-drained foot path? Though the food was good overall the breakfast sausages were horrible. And two restaurants at the same hotel with two different prices? Enough ranting. Compare this place to the
Lost Iguana lodge at Arenal. That was only a little more money but there is no comparison. Contrast is the right word.

Sapo Dorado is a true mountain hotel. When my husband and I arrived to the hotel, we were very surprised about the location of its rooms. They are all surrounded with nature and the rate is very fair.
I really recommend this lodge to those nature lovers that want a moment of peace in Monteverde.
